Category criteria

The World Food Awards are open exclusively to companies specialising, promoting or stocking products from the following countries: Asia, the Orient, Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East and South America. With respect to these awards, world foods are defined as beyond Europe and North American foods, covering the following kinds of cuisine: Chinese food – including Peking, Cantonese and other Chinese variations; Indian food; Mexican and Tex-Mex food; Thai and other oriental cuisines; Other cuisines covered include – Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Vietnamese, African, Middle Eastern, Turkish and South American.

Entries are free of charge

  • If entering in more than one category, please ensure you complete a seperate entry form for each category.
  • Awards for 2017 are based on achievements/products introduced or developed between January 2016 to June 2017 (with the exception of Lifetime Achievement Award)
  • Entries must arrive no later than July 31st, 2017

Independent Wholesaler of the Year

This category is open to foodservice, wholesale and cash & carry operations based in the UK who demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the world food sector and provide exceptional levels of customer service with respect to product knowledge, availability, supply and deliveries.

Marketing Campaign of the Year

From a brand new launch to a re-vamp of an established campaign, this category recognises a creative and original marketing campaign that has achieved exceptional success. Whether it is an integrated multimedia campaign or a simple Ad creative, the highly innovative approach has helped the brand stand out from its competitors during the past year.

National Retailer of the Year

Open to national retailers across the UK who demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the world food sector and provide exceptional levels of customer service with respect to product knowledge, availability, supply and delivery. This national retailer serves the needs of its local community, adapting and creating a world food range that reflects and embraces the diversity of its local population.

Restaurant – Opening of the Year

Exclusively judged by David Moore (of the TV show The Restaurant) and his team of experts, this category is open to restaurants that have provided an innovative concept to the world food restaurant scene. From exceptional reviews by respected food critics to bringing exotic, new world flavours to the attention of UK diners, this category also takes into account how the restaurant has helped elevate the profile of world food generally.

Lifetime Achievement Award - nomination from Association

This accolade is awarded to an individual who has contributed to the world food market over their lifetime, and demonstrated the following qualities:

  • Exceptional entrepreneurial spirit, a pioneer in product introduction and a lifelong passion for the industry that has led to exceptional success.
  • A pioneer of new approaches and an ability to adapt to meet changing consumer needs.
  • A high level of continued success, excellent leadership qualities and an inspiration to all around.
  • A keen sense of corporate social responsibility, championing ethical values and making an active contribution to the wider community.
  • An individual who has contributed towards an increased awareness of the world food industry as a whole.

AWARDS VOTED BY THE PUBLIC – NOT OPEN TO ENTRY

To mark the increasing popularity of ethnic products in the market place, The World Food Association, has opened up several categories to public vote this year, including;

Restaurant 'Chain of the Year' - public vote

Exclusively judged by the public, this category is aimed at chains that have brought an innovative concept to the world food dining landscape, helping educate and elevate the profile of its chosen cuisine. Enjoying exceptional public support and bringing exotic, new world flavours to the attention of UK diners, this category aims to discover the nation’s favourite ethnic chain in 2017. The shortlist for this category is determined by David Moore and his team of experts.

Best World Food or Drink Brand of the Year – public vote

This award marks the phenomenal success of a brand or product which has established a prominent presence within the market place. The winner of this category will have created a significant impact in the public arena. What is the nation’s favourite ethnic brand in 2017! Watch this space….

World Foods Cookbook of the Year – public vote

This category is open to world food chefs and writers that have made a significant contribution to the proliferation of ethnic food and flavours within the public arena. Their successful cookbook will not only have inspired a whole new audience but their outstanding influence and contribution within the ethnic food sector has led to a shift in consumer preferences and tastes. This award will recognise the key role chefs play in world food’s ever growing popularity through their published recipe books.

Submissions Guidelines

To enter please write a submission of up to 1500 words on why you should win and return it with your completed entry form. Evidence of your successes should be included within your written submission, from market share figures to sales and profit data etc.

All awards, with the exception of the Lifetime Achievement Award, are based on achievements during the preceding 18 months to the award’s entry deadline.

Entries can also be accompanied by three items of supporting evidence, including reports and accounts, advertising campaign samples, press coverage, photography, market research reports, testimonials, internal brochures etc.

Your written submission, entry form and supporting evidence should all be saved electronically onto a USB memory stick and sent to the below address. Five hard copies of your full entry, and any supporting evidence, should also be posted. Please send your submissions to the following address:
